First Party System: 1792-1824
Second Party System: 1828-1854
Third Party System: 1854-1890s
Fourth Party System: 1896-1932
Fifth & Sixth Party Systems: 1933-present
first 2-party system included the Federalist Party (they supported the ratification of the Constitution) and the Democratic-Republican Party ((aka Anti-Federalists) they opposed the powerful central government established by the Constitution when it took effect in 1789).
Modern 2-party system consists of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Largest 3rd party is Libertarian.
