Main Idea: Robots MAIN IDEAS
Robots are machines designed to perform certain tasks.
People have thought of ideas for robots since ancient times.
Robots may be used for work, play, and entertainment.
What A Robot is: A robot is a machine programmed to perform certain tasks. Many kinds of robots exist. Some robots make products in factories. Others entertain people. Some robots are toys for children. Robots may be designed to do all kinds of things.

Types of Robots:
ANCIENT ROBOTS
Ideas for robots have existed since ancient times.
The ancient Greeks worshipped the god Hephaestus (hi-FESS-Tus). He was a master at working with metal.
Hephaestus created many kinds of robots. Some were made of gold and looked like women. They worked in the homes of other gods. Hephaestus also created a special type of table. It had three legs and could walk around.

LATER ROBOTS
Al-Jazari was an inventor who lived in Anatolia. This land is now the country of Turkey.
Al-Jazari made a musical robot band. His robot included four figures. It had pegs fixed to a drum-like machine. The pegs hit levers in a certain sequence as the drum turned. The levers moved the figures. The figures played music. The robot was used to entertain people at parties.
Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian artist, scientist, and inventor. He came up with the first design for a robot that moved like a person.
The robot looked like a knight in armor. The head and jaw of the knight would move. The robot knight could sit up. It was even able to wave its arms. All of the movements were made with cables (ropes) and pulleys (grooved wheels).
By the 1700s, people were making mechanical ducks and toys. These are kinds of robots. They worked through the movement of gears and wheels.
Scientist Nikola Tesla had the idea of using electricity to power robots. He invented a remote-controlled boat. The US government gave him a patent for this invention in 1898.

MODERN ROBOTS
Robots carry out many tasks in modern factories today. Unimate became the first factory robot in 1961. It worked on the assembly line at a car factory. Now robots weld car parts together. They tighten screws and bolts and install windshields. They complete many other jobs, too.
The Walt Disney Company has made many robots for use in entertainment. Its first robots were moving animals. Visitors to Disneyland and Disney World ride riverboats and see these robots along the shore of a river. Some of the robots were made to work in the water itself, such as robot hippos.
One of Disney’s most famous robot shows is the Hall of Presidents. Robots represent all the American presidents. Different figures stand up and speak to the audience. They talk about the United States and its leaders.
