There have been many methods of recording time through the ages. People didn't always have the same kind of clocks and calendars that we have now. Studying the stars, moon, sun and seasons were necessary to tell time. In this lesson we will review telling time on a face clock.

VOCABULARY

clockwise Direction that clock hands go.

A clock has two hands, the hour hand and the minute hand. The front of the clock is called the face of the clock. The clock is numbered from 1 to 12. There are five minutes between each number, and a total of 60 minutes on the clock face.

The hands of the clock move around the numbers on the face of the clock. Starting at number 12, at the top of the clock, the hands move towards the right. This is called a clockwise direction. The little (shorter) hand shows us the hour. The big (longer) hand shows us the minute.

We look at the number that the hour hand is moving away from to tell the hour.

The hour hand moves around the clock twice, or 2 times in each day. A day is measured from midnight (twelve o'clock) on one day to midnight the next day. We say a day is measured from midnight to midnight.

There are 12 hours before noon and 12 hours after noon. We use the letters a.m. and p.m. to help us tell time. Noon is called 12:00 p.m. since it begins the afternoon and evening hours. Midnight is called 12:00 a.m. since it begins the morning hours. The time before noon is a.m. The time after noon is p.m.
