İstiklal marşı'nın yazılma ve bestelenme süreci Türkiye de, ulusal marş yazılması önerisi, önce 1920 yılında İsmet Paşa dan (İnönü) geldi Maarif Vekaletinde bu öneriyi dikkate alarak bir yarışma düzenledi O günlerde Türk Kurtuluş savaşı en heyecanlı günlerini yaşıyordu; toplumda ulusal bilinci pekiştirecek, ulusçuluk duygusunu daha da canlı kılacak bir marşa gereksinme duyuluyordu Yarışmada ayrıca güfteyi yazacak olana 500TL, besteyi yazacak olana 1000TL ödül vereceği duyuruldu Yarışmaya katılan 724 şiirden hiçbiri başarılı bulunmadı Mehmet Akif Ersoy, böyle bir ödülden rahatsızlık duyduğu için yarışmaya katılmamıştı Dönemin Maarif Vekil Hamdullah Suphi (Tanrıöver) ,Mehmet Akif e Mektup yazıp, kendisi için sakıncalı gördüğü konularda güvence verdikten sonra Mehmet Akif, 48 saat gibi kısa bir sürede marşın güftesini yazıp imzasız olarak Maali Vekaline gönderdi TBMM nin 1 Mart 1921 tarihli toplantısında okunan bu şiir, 12 Mart 1921 tarihli toplantıda da ulusal marş olarak kabul edildi

Marşın Bestelenmesi: İstiklâl Marşı, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti ve Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyetinin milli marşıdır Sözleri Mehmet Akif Ersoy tarafından yazılan İstiklâl Marşı, 12 Mart 1921de resmen milli marş olarak kabul edildi 1924 yılında Ali Rıfat Çağatayın bestesi kabul edildi 1930 yılına kadar kullanılan bu beste, bu tarihte Cumhurbaşkanlığı Orkestrası şefi olan Osman Zeki Üngörün bestesi ile değiştirildi Marşın armonik düzenlemesi Edgar Manas, bando düzenlemesi ise İhsan Servet Künçer tarafından yapıldı Günümüzde de aynı beste kullanılmaktadır İstiklal Marşı''nın yalnızca ilk iki kıtası bestelenmiştir
