C# is a popular general-purpose, object-oriented programming language initially released by Microsoft in the year 2002 as an alternative to the Java programming language (Dietrich, 2020). It has since grown immensely, both in popularity as well as unique features that has later come to define C# and place it among the most used programming languages in the world (). C# has steadily risen in popularity since its launch in 2002. As of a 2020 Stackoverflow survey, it is in the top 10 of most used and loved programming languages (Stackoverflow, 2020).

One of the things that make C# so powerful is that it is backed by the .NET Framework, also developed by Microsoft. .NET contains a wide array of tools, helpers and extensions out of the box, that helps the developer write efficient code, minimizing boilerplate code.

C# is mainly used for building software that runs on the .NET platform. As C# and .NET have grown, this includes a lot of areas; website development, windows application development, game development and hybrid app development.

We have chosen this language as one of the five languages due to it’s beginner-friendliness, it’s cross-platform capabilities, it’s popularity and of course it’s large and growing useful toolbox in the .NET framework.
