Atomic Theory:
-The idea of an atomic theory is more than 2000 years old
- until recently, scientists had never seen evidence of atoms
-The law of definite proportions, The law of conservation of mass, and the law of multiple proportions support the current atomic theory
The Law of Definite Proportions
-A given compound always has the same proportion of its constituent elements by mass

The law of conservation of matter
-Mass must be equal
-Matter is not created or destroyed in any physical or chemical process
-Conservation of matter also ties to phase changes and chemical reactions

The law of multiple proportions
-Two elements form more than one compound then the ratios of the masses of the second element which combine with a fixed mass of the first element will be ratios of small whole numbers so at first

Dalton's Atomic Theory
-Everything is made of atoms
-(1.)All matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms, which cannot be subdivided, created, or destroyed
-(2.) Oxygen looks and acts like Oxygen regardless of where it is
-(3.) O can be distinguished from H
-(4.) even though they are different elements can form compounds
-(5.) and they are not destroyed in forming compounds
