تطبّق النباتات تفاعلًا كيميائيًا يسمى التركيب الضوئي لتحويل ثاني أكسيد الكربون والماء إلى طعام (جلوكوز) وأكسجين. إنها واحدة من أكثر التفاعلات الكيميائية اليومية شيوعًا وأيضًا واحدة من أهم التفاعلات لأن هذه هي الطريقة التي تنتج بها النباتات الغذاء لأنفسها وللحيوانات وتحويل ثاني أكسيد الكربون إلى أكسجين.

تنتج النباتات ايضا هرمونات مختلفة . و تنتج مواد كيميائية تؤثر في النباتات الاخرى و الحيوانات . فبعض النباتاتت الصحراوية تنتج مواد كيميائية في جذورها تسبب تسمم الارض حولها حيث يمنع هذا التسمم البذور الاخرى من الانبات و بالتالي يمنع النباتات الاخرى من النمو بالقرب منها . وبذلك يحفظ لهذا النبات الماء النادر وجوده في هذه البيئة الصحراوية . و عندما تهاجم الحشرات هذه النباتات يبدأ العديد منها بانتاج كميات صغيرة من المواد الكيميائية السامة التي تطرد الحشرات بعيدا .
