The similarities between 18th century Jefferson and Jefferson during his presidency were that he continued to oppose taxes and support the common man. Before his presidency, Jefferson opposed taxation as shown through his stance against Hamilton’s financial plan which he continued through his presidency. During his presidency he repealed the excise tax on whiskey which further proves his dislike for taxes. He also fired Federal tax collectors to reduce the size of the government which continued to advocate for his stance on taxation. In terms of highlighting his continued support of Democratic Republican ideals, Jefferson continued to support a lesser central government, as he did before he was president, in order to sustain the American ideal of liberty. His allowance of the Alien and Sedition acts to expire proves his continued advocacy against them as he believed they infringed on the liberty of the citizens.
