Long story short.
The action hinges upon two brothers-kings: King Muskrat and the Lord of the birds. The first one, King Muskrat, wanted to catch a fish "whose fat was sorcery", but the only squid for this fish had to be made of the Lord's of the birds eyes. There was a battle, and the Lord of the birds was killed by his brother. King Muskrat ripped out his eyes and caught the magic fish "with a human face". But after partaking the fish and laying his hands on that great power King Muskrat was cursed by heaven, and now he roams the world and mourns his brother he killed so insidiously.
