Conventions Of The Short Story
Unlike a novel, everything is limited. Apart from that the writing of it is very similar.
It should have a simple plot/idea
Up to two settings
Limited characters (no more than three) - keep them convincing
Structure - Expedition (opening), rising action, conflict, climax, falling action, ending - this is marked on your ability to build character, theme, setting and employment of writer’s techniques
A clever technique is symbolism, which usually impresses the marker
A thing to avoid - difficult settings or characters
Short stories tend to start in the middle
Symbols
Flowers can symbolise stages of life
Seasons - This can symbolise the life or death of something
Fire can symbolise anger
Water can symbolise moving on, cleansing and some biblical connotations
Birds can symbolise freedom
Jewelry can symbolise love/friendship
