LANGLIT IO (10 mins)
Lit - To Kill a Mockingbird
Non-lit - Nosedive (Black Mirror)
Global issue - Politics, Power, Justice (Politics - more on TKAM but nosedive also has because the government takes part in the rating, power because higher status equals more power, justice - more power, justice moves to your side)
Reason - Both texts involve characters in who live in a place where status is everything. Their status dictates what they can and cannot do. Their status also has a say in what rights they have and what they can do. In To Kill a Mockingbird, their was a very strict hierarchy and racial discrimination. Depending on your status and race, the rights and justice you receive varies. In Nosedive, citizens receive points or ratings, the higher the rating, the higher their status. The higher their status, the more things they can do and the more things they can get away with. Both texts show how status affects the way people live their lives. It is a reflection of reality because nowadays, the higher your social status, the more power you have and the more you can get away with things. An example, is a rich person getting away with a crime that a poor person would not be able to get away with. Additionally, 'famous' people such as celebrities are able to get away with doing disrespectful things just because they are high up in the society.
Similarities - Both texts feature people of different statuses and the separation is clearly seen. Both texts involve a society where there are injustices especially against those with lower social standings. Both can be seen in real life (TKAM - government against poor, Nosedive - those with a bigger following are more powerful)
Differences - While both texts reflect certain aspects of society today, the setting of TKAM is a real life setting while that of Nosedive is a bit more fantasy like.
