she was supposed to be asleep but then she heard the car of the policeman driving in their yard. she wanted to see who it was so she got out of her bed and peered under the shade. she wanted to lie down and go under her blanket but she must not do that. she must get up and lock all the doors then she must stand in front of the door and listen to every word that the people outside are talking about instead. the talk outside is very important so she threw her blanket out of her body and got down the bed, as her foot landed she felt the cold floor. if they didn't talk about her she could return to her bed and continue her rest. she ran her hand under the pillow and brought out the big key that she kept there. she padded from door to door turning them and at the dark one that led into the hall, she stood still and listened. ed was in front of the door and he was saying " yes, she lives here. she's my sister. but she always sleeps late, and we don't like the idea of waking her."
" that may not be necessary Mr. johnson" the policeman had a heavy and deep voice and it was rather nice too, she thought. at least it had said something that calms her heart a bit. she felt so much better that she thought of going back to her bed. but she couldn't for the policemen said something else. "Mrs. homka- where did she live before she came here with you? wasn't one of the company houses on division street?"
"why, yes" she heard ed say unsure because he wondered how the policemen knew that. she gripped the key tightly in her hand and pressed it closer to the crack of the door, hoping that she could see as well as hear. "the people there say funny things are happening and want us to investigate. It's nothing much much-nothing dangerous so far-but they're mystified and I must say I can't blame them. the reason I'm here is because they mentioned Mrs. homka. Can I see your sister?" the policemen said. "why? you could. I guess but you mean now? but as I have said we don't like the idea of waking her up. she's a poor sleeper and morning is her worst time of the day. I don't think she feels well." ed answered.
"may I come in Mr. johnson?" she heard the policeman said. Clara must have come up from the kitchen. " what is it, ed? I'm Mrs. johnson"
" he's asking about Margery." ed said.
"Margery!" this is all the lady could say.
