This quote appealing to logos using an analogy is effective because of the fact that it compares the author to a mugger. It proves that people judge him based on his appearance and assume that he is dangerous to them. This appeal is important to the speaker’s goal primarily because it shows that Staples is affected by the women's reaction to his presence on the streets.
By using an analogy to compare himself to a mugger, Staples claim that white women treat him differently due to skin color is proven to the audience. When everyone treats you unfairly, you start to believe you deserve that. Brent Staples if hurt by the fact women try to avoid him only based off their biased assumptions.
This analogy represents the speaker’s logical conclusion because he was made indifferent to the muggers in the ghetto to the white women that encounter him. He concludes that because of his skin color as an African American male, he is made a “threat” to women.
