Prométhée, le titan ayant créé les humains en modelant de la poterie, provoqua la colère de Jupiter suite aux disputes des mortels. Celui-ci veut même les exterminer ! Il convoqua tous les dieux pour leur faire part de son désir. Puis s’apprêtant à lancer sa foudre sur les humains, Jupiter craignit de faire flamber tout l’univers. Il décida alors d’agir par l’eau plutôt que par le feu. Jupiter fit appel à Neptune, roi de la mer. Celui-ci dit aux fleuves de libérer leur violence. Les fleuves obéirent et noyèrent chaque humains. Il ne restait plus de la terre que deux mortels : Deucalion et Pyrrha. Ils en pleuraient tellement que Thémis, déesse de la justice, prit pitié d’eux et leur dit : « Jetez derrière vous les os de votre grand-mère ». Ils obéirent et derrière eux, de nouveaux humains apparurent.
