Rodzaje nadwrażliwości to kwestia, którą zajmowali się P. H. G. Gell i Robin Coombs.
Początkowo uważano, że za wszelkie reakcje nadwrażliwości odpowiedzialne jest nieprawidłowe wytwarzanie przeciwciał klasy IgE. Dopiero dalsze badania prowadzone wspólnie przez Robina Coombsa i Philipa Gella w latach 60. XX wieku, doprowadziły do odkrycia czterech (obecnie pięciu) odmiennych typów reakcji nadwrażliwości. W związku z powyższym termin nadwrażliwość jest pojęciem szerszym i nie jest synonimem alergii sensu stricto.
