1) relative dating - the actual age is not determined, younger/older rocks are only determine, it is not always reliable. Can help us estimate time span b/w major earthquakes, storms, etc. Gives us a view chronological events in history. Only in Sedimentary rocks.

Geologic Time Scale GTS is method of determining in which relative dating. If fossils are found below it is older.
PRINCIPLES OF RD
*Law of superstition - younger are on top of older deposites
*Law of Original Horizontality - If rocks are deposited horizontally, if they are tilted it happened later. Still, the rock layer on top is younger, while the bottom is older.
*Law of Lateral Continuity - if rocks are cracked in middle the top is still connected meaning to say the still have the same age.
*Law of Cross-Cutting Relationship - if the layer of rocks has been cut through, that intrusion is younger than those existing rocks.
2) absolute dating/radiometric dating - there is an exact number, gives an actual age. Helps us determine the age of earth, Helps us determine when specific events in history of earth. absolute dating is only done among igneous rock
Radioactive - gives off daughter isotope, where in ther scientist canvdetermined
K-Ar dating &U-Pb dating - it could determined into 5 billion years
