"Important" is a weird term to use in this question. The answer would differ depending on whose asking. But for this, I would say no

They don't pass energy along- they just release it
10 What is the difference between the flow of ENERGY and the flow of NUTRIENTS?
Nutrients aren't necessarily energy, and vice versa. You need energy to access nutrients, and you need nutrients to access energy.
11 Terrestrial NPP is greatest where?
In the tropics where it is wet and warm
12 WHY?
It's more hospitable for plants
13 IN marine environments, where is NPP the greatest?
Near coastlines, and other areas where nutrients are brought to the surface

Because ecosystems can flourish more when there is more energy and nutrients.
