Vegan wine may sound like a radical concept at first glance, but it isn't. In fact, it is actually a natural part of how the wineries have been preparing their wines for a long time. While the methods may have changed over the years, they are still used and produce excellent wines. The production of vegan wine is a delicate procedure that involves a large range of variables to get the best result. One crucial step in the process of making vegan wine usually involves a process known as fining.
Fining is the process of adding a fining agent into the vat, which is then later removed from the wine. Historically, Organic wine was made from clay that either contained animal products or animal byproducts, and some cultures used clay for all purpose. Wine merchant has sought to find other, more natural, ways to add nutrients to vegan wine, and now companies are using clay derived from coconut shell to give their products that same natural flavor and taste.
It's important to note that there aren't many vegan friendly winery companies that exclusively make vegan friendly wines. There are, however, companies that use grape seedling instead of grapes when they process the wine. Grape seedling is made from the tiny seeds of the grapes and is much less expensive than using real grapes. Some wine producers are switching to this method so as to reduce their carbon footprint, but it isn't available everywhere and most of the wineries making wine in America still use grapes.
Some animal rights groups have also begun promoting vegetarian wines as an alternative to traditionally non-vegan wines. Some of these companies make their wine without any added fruit, but rather use plant based alcohols to create their products. Wine made this way is generally considered vegan friendly, but it's always important to read labels and know what you're buying. In order to get the highest antioxidant content possible, wine producers will often use organic grapes.
While most people don't think about it, there are actually two major components in most vegan wine: grape pulp and the casein protein from the wool. Both of these can be derived from an animal-friendly growing process. In addition, milk and egg free gelatin are sometimes added as casein, and both are considered by some to be an animal-friendly part of the wine making process. There is some debate as to whether or not these ingredients affect the taste or are necessary for the creation of a "cruelty-free" product.
Another important ingredient is agar, which is the powdered form of a traditional wine ingredient called cells. Agar can be derived from a number of things, including the bark of the cashew tree, which is commonly used in vegan diets. Other agar-based ingredients include coconut, hemp and other grains, seeds, roots and even fish. All of these plant-based components play an important role in creating healthy and exciting vegan wines.
