First my son figured 8 was not divisible by 3. I imagine he was picturing 99 - 88. With the remainder then being 11, also not divisible by 3 the answer was then: no.
Unsure his approach was correct he then tried to prove himself wrong. #SelfDoubt
He then figured 90 was divisible by 3, and since 90 minus 3 is 87 the answer is still: no.
So, correction he only used 2 steps as I recall*.
Another question though was: Is 83 divisible by 9?
At this point he answered quickly and without hesitation. I asked how was he so sure? His reply:
90 is divisible by 9. 90 minus 9 is 81. So... No, 83 is not divisible by 9.
No scratch paper. No fractions. No carrying of numbers. Just basic tens and ones, and single digit multiplication.
He answered 120 questions getting 1 wrong.
