Coin flipping, coin toss, or simply head or tail, is the act of tossing a coin in the air, then examining closely whether it lands on heads or tails, to decide between two choices, heads or tails, at times used to settle a debate between two individuals. Some people would simply claim that there is no such thing as coin flipping as the professionals would assert differently. While others would simply call it a game or recreational pastime. The first type of coin flip was invented by Julius Caesar himself who tossed two coins one after the other from the balcony of the temple of Caesar's statue in Rome. These two coins landed on heads one in each hand. The crowd, impressed by the strange event, believed that Caesar had thrown something at them. This marked the birth of the custom of heads or tails on coins. From this vantage point, coin flipping became known as a game or pastime. Coin collectors would gather as a group and examine the coins in a format resembling a head or a tail's game.

Coin toss games were prevalent during the Roman occupation of areas adjacent to theirs in Egypt, Cyrene and the rest of the Mediterranean region. During this time, the currency used in these areas was based on the value of grains. The grains were divided into smaller units to be exchanged for money which was standardized by the size of the unit. Coin toss was considered a skill amongst the upper class citizens.

In ancient Greece, the demure princess Alise became the wife of a wealthy merchant, Jephtha. She carried a wooden sling over her back and wore a crown with four small bells on it. When she tossed a coin towards the merchant, it resulted in the ball being dropped to the ground. Whoever knew the number by which the coin had changed hands was the winner of the game called the Heads or Tails.

Coins that have been flipped to indicate that particular members of a society engaged in coin buying and selling. This is due to the fact that many of the settlements, cities, and nations throughout history all had a strong currency in terms of gold and silver. The value of these metals fluctuated throughout the course of time; however they always returned to their original value when the economy or government of a community recovered from a local crisis or war. Heads or Tails may seem simple to someone else, but the fact is that the game of Heads or Tails has been around for a very long time.
