Concrete repair is essentially the procedure to repair an existing hardened concrete surface which over time has lost its ability to hold the concrete binding components together due to either weather or physical damage. It is also possible for concrete to become cracked over a period of years, which will also have an adverse affect on the structural integrity of the concrete. Where concrete has cracks, it can be difficult for professionals to successfully repair without effectively changing the surface. This is because any damage to the surface will immediately begin to show, which makes it very difficult to hide the cracks. Even when the cracks are hidden, it is still possible for them to spread, meaning that your concrete repair project needs to continue until all the cracks have been covered and dried out.

The problem with cracks in concrete is that they cannot be repaired using typical repair techniques, such as cement-based mixture. In fact, such damage will only provide the additional problem of movement once the concrete has begun to dry out - essentially, the cracks will be unsightly, but not structurally important. For this reason, many professionals will suggest the use of a coating that is similar in nature to epoxy resins for the repair of concrete. These coatings will penetrate the surface and prevent future cracks from spreading once the initial sealing has been applied.

One of the primary reasons why concrete repair becomes necessary is simply due to the weight of the vehicle that initially pulled it into position. As such, the amount of reinforcement used to keep it in place is less than if the same automobile had been underpinned with steel reinforcement. For this reason, concrete replacement may be the only viable solution. It can even be a cost-effective way to get your auto back on the road, as steel reinforcement will typically be much more expensive. At the same time, the structural integrity of the existing concrete will be preserved, saving you money on the purchase of a new vehicle.

While you can seek professional help for concrete repair, it is often the case that an amateur can successfully perform the repairs on their own. One of the most common methods is the chipping technique. The chipper itself is made up of a diamond core bit, which is used to chip away at the affected area. This process is not only easy to perform, but it leaves a beautiful scar, which is quite distinct from unsightly scratches.

Before starting on a concrete repair job, make sure that any damaged or chipped concrete surfaces have been completely cleaned. A little bit of mild soap and water will do the trick, as long as all chemical-laden materials have been eliminated from the area. If not, use a chemical stain remover before beginning the actual work. Once you have the area clean and free of contamination, begin the repairs. Most of the damage will be located within the walls and floors, so make sure that you plan ahead to account for that area.

Once the concrete repair has been started, make sure that you have all the required tools on hand. Typically, this includes: a tape measure, a level, a hammer, a concrete drill, hand saw, a wet/dry vacuum with an attachment for cleaning out cracks, a Brad nailer, sandpaper, rags, cement board, and a drill. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may want to rent or buy additional equipment to assist in the repairs. For example, small cracks may require only a hammer and a level. Larger cracks may need hand saws, brads, Sanders, and cement boards. And extremely severe damage may require renting or buying a crane, a dump truck, and/or an industrial bucket truck.

When performing concrete repairs on your own, you should keep in mind that the type of repair you are performing will determine the frequency of your visits to the garage. For example, concrete sealers tend to be very thick and will thus take longer to heal than other types of concrete. In addition, small cracks may easily become larger cracks, especially when water penetrates the surface. This means that you will more often than not need to repair these larger cracks.

Furthermore, concrete structures are usually assembled upside down, which means that water can penetrate the structure through gaps in the flashing and around the edges of the structure.
