The Problems With 'Possums

If you're to set up a camera and take nighttime photos of the area beneath your bird feeder, you'd be astounded by the range of animals that will show up.
Opossums (possums), along with all kinds of other species seem to have a built-in GPS that knows the positioning of the bird feeder within the neighborhood. These animals and then make nightly house calls to clean inside the seeds that birds have scattered on the floor under the bird feeder.
Although possums have an overabundance of teeth (50) than some other North American animal, they usually acquiesce to raccoons, and can often fight with skunks over those discarded bird-seeds. Some in the nighttime skunk odors you smell are due to those skunk and possum confrontations.
As these nocturnal animals visit and from the bird feeder, at times their route is going to take them down the first step toward your house. They may take a look at your air conditioning equipment to get a drink of water on the condensation pipe for the unit. That's when the real trouble begins.
Many air conditioning units have openings in the frame which the machine sits. Animals can squeeze through these openings and gain access in your crawlspace. Now they possess a safe home to reside in, near a water and meal source.
Not being house-broken, these animals deposit waste (usually down the inside foundation wall) beneath your house, and you might learn to experience unpleasant odors filtering up into your house. Another problem primarily associated with possums are fleas.
Over time, as fleas multiply on these animals some with the fleas will begin to come up with the floor and to the house. Our company gets several phone calls each month from your own home owners with flea problems who don't even own pets. Many times those fleas would be the result of a possum and other animal inside crawlspace.
Now onto a few of the more unpleasant possum problems. One is odor. Possums will exude an extremely unpleasant green secretion at times of distress and it's also a significant smell to behold. Possums also have a very very short lifespan. Whether it's a design flaw, bad luck or maybe plain not enough intelligence, possums go on average only 24 months inside the wild. Of all of the dead animals we remove from crawlspaces, approximately 80% are possums. The smell of a clicking possum is one area you truly want to avoid, as would be the fleas looking for a new "live" host.
