5W40 is an engine oil rating that's used by many makers of engine oils, such as Shell, Honda, Mercedes, Nissan, Daewoo and others. The W stands for winter, the number following it denotes the oil's viscosity (or thickness) in cold temperatures (hence the W"), and the figure after it denotes viscosities at high temperatures (150C on average). This rating is given before any other specifications or information, such as engine size or weight. Viscosities are measured in grains per square inch, or GPM; each GPM is equal to one grain. So a higher number, like GPM 8, means thicker oil.
One of the things that affects the viscosities of oils is heat. Hot oil forces friction to go up, which means that oil with a lower temperature has more friction and thus causes less flow resistance as well. And since 5w40 engine oil is a visco-elastic lubricant, its ability to soak up heat increases, which improves its performance even more.
It is important to note that both GPM and GSH are based on absolute temperatures, not relative temperatures. Absolute temperatures can be very different from one moment to the next. So, you can see how some manufactures' claim their oils have higher GSH and others claim theirs have higher GPM.
