Expressionist Architecture: Characteristics
Expressionist art, also known as expressist architecture, was an artistic architectural movement in Europe in the early part of the 20th century along with the performance arts and painting of the expressionist movement which in particular flourished and was a major influence in Germany. Expressionist architecture is one of three main types of Modernist architecture: International Style, Expressionist or Constructivist architecture. It was a reaction to the uninteresting and over-production quality of mass-produced buildings. The architecture was mostly focused on small houses and spaces for art.

Many people think that the word "expressionist" is derived from the use of "expression," but this is not true since the expressionist style of architecture, as opposed to classic or realist architectural styles, did not employ any form, such as doors, windows or even architectural features. The architectural style prior to the Expressionist movement, which began to emerge in the late 1890s, was defined by formalism or minimalism that was not characterized by any kind of creativity or exploration of the form. This style was born out of the desire for an original and unique design when building new buildings or homes. The early modernist adoption of a uniform and minimalistic design helped to create a sense of uniformity in architecture that was highly applauded in Germany at the time.

The main feature of the Expressionist style was the use of different shapes, textures, colors, and shapes. This was a break from the traditional styles which tend to be boring in their construction and materials, colors and shapes. People were fed up of the monotony of traditional designs and wanted to break away from more fashionable styles prior the Expressionist movement.

Expressionist architecture uses various shapes and textures, including slate, granite, concrete wood, metal and ceramic tile. Expressionist architecture was distinguished by its unique appearance due to the use of new materials. In addition the use of different forms and textures gave expressionism architecture an edge over peers because it was able to create an environment that was more unique than the more traditional designs of the early modernist architectural styles.

One of the most distinctive aspects of expressionism architecture is its use of a variety of shapes and textures. Expressionist architecture utilized metal for the construction of the majority of its structures instead of the traditional concrete, masonry, and stucco. This included steel structures that were part of parks museums, parks, or other public structures. These steel buildings were constructed using various types of material including wrought iron, sheet steel, and aluminum along with stucco and concrete.

The word "faience" actually referred to the use of metalwork to highlight the decorative elements of an building. The metalwork was primarily used on the building's roof to differentiate them from other structures. A wide range of faience was subsequently developed and was later used in Expressionist architecture. There were a variety of panels of faience for the exteriors and roofs of buildings, including simple tiled roofs with faience. Alongside metalwork the interiors of an Expressionist building could be decorated using fabric, lace, wallpaper, paintings, and other types of art.

Expressionist architecture also features one of the most striking features: the use of natural materials. For instance, instead using steel to construct a staircase the stairs were built out of wood, and the windows from stained glass. The emphasis was put on the natural elements of architecture when using natural materials. As a result, most churches built in Expressionist Architecture were designed outdoors using plants and foliage as a large part of their designs. In addition to the natural materials used in the construction of the church the interior of the church would include furniture made out of wood that was reclaimed.

Expressionist architecture emphasizes the use of texture and light in the design of architectural structures. Walls are often painted in lighter colors, while interiors are often made with large windows and doors. Interior designs often use vibrant colours rather than the more muted hues used in contemporary architecture. In https://www.tonsilparchitect.com/ of the church architecture expressionism of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello is a good case in the point.
