Notes - notes.io

Hi, this might be long, but please read it.
For those who have gone to the Wellesley dump at night, please be aware of the following. It is illegal to trespass on the premises, and it is illegal to steal anything. Let me repeat: stealing items from the Wellesley dump is illegal. Furthermore, Olin students have been caught stealing before. They were heavily fined, and they had to go to a court hearing. Stealing from the dump should not be treated lightly.
I know that dump raiding is a big part of Olin culture, so I will not discourage it, but instead, here are a few pieces of wisdom that upperclassmen passed down to me or that I have learned from personal experience. From what I saw last night, I think it would be prudent to pass it along.
1) Understand the risks. It may be rare, but it only takes one mistake or an unlucky encounter for things to go south very quickly.
1) please, don't take large groups. Groups really shouldn't be larger than 4-5 people.
2) please be quiet, even if it is unlikely that people in the neighborhood might hear you, if the main gate opens or if an employee returns late, you want to be able to hear that.
3) please don't waive your flashlight around. Speaking from experience, I saw the group last night from over 500 ft away because of the flashlights. Avoid flashlights when possible, and if you need to use it, keep the light pointed downward and beam contained.
4) when walking back to Olin, please be quiet. The last thing you want is for a Wellesley resident to wake up and see a bunch of kids carrying away stolen items. They may call the police.
5) Watch out for Babo. Babo knows that Olin students steal items from the dump; you are not going to fool them if the see you carrying items back. If you see a Babo car on their scheduled patrol, drop anything suspicious you are carrying and come back later for it.
6) I'm not sure if everyone knows this, but there is a shortcut through the Babson baseball fields onto the aqueduct trail, it saves walking through most of the residential neighborhood.
Look, I think the dump can be a great place to find lost treasures, but what I saw last night was straight up reckless and dangerous. Please take these words not as criticism or as annoying preaching, but as heartfelt advice (and genuine concern). I just want people to make sure they understand the risks that they are taking and for everyone to stay safe.
