Sexuality, Suicide, and Conflict
A few days ago, I was having a libation with a local watering hole. I was minding my very own business, contemplating writing and watching people live their lives. While a slave to, a person wearing dirty jeans along with a Labor's Union shirt yelled out over the room, "Let's get out of here, this is a fag bar." As you can imagine, this hadn't look at well with 98.9% with the pub's customers, many of whom are actually drinking for, I suspect, hours. The following event is exactly what ensued: "Who the f*@# you speaking with, I'm no fag," one patron roared. The agitator exclaimed, "Mind your personal f*%&ing business, I wasn't actually talking to you." Another patron, clearly annoyed from the exchange, "Get the f%$# beyond here before I kick your ass, none folks are fags." Then, as I suspected, several men prepared for battle. "Come on mother$#@%er, let's do that," he yelled. This fiasco ensued for a couple of arduous minutes, both the rival factions sizing one another up, relocating circles, both parties slowly moving on the door, the exit with the idea to escape or an open battlefield. As you can imagine, I was soaking this up like water to some sponge. After all, I'm a master of conflict, and I always find conflict and it is predictability fascinating. No punches were thrown that day, the agitators left; the bar again became silent.
I've witnessed this ballot of conflict numerous times; however, I find it fascinating how prevalent heterosexism is still amongst males in our society. After all, I was alone who told each party to settle down and conquer their homophobia. I, naturally, couldn't help but chime in, after all, there were a conflict, and I wanted a chunk. As I calculated, neither party heard me or my statement. At the time I made the statement, each party couldn't hear me; we were holding in fight or flight. They were dedicated to one another, their exhilarating, as well as their testosterone spiking. At this point, I was invisible.
We've developed a large amount of progress for gays and lesbians with this country, but our progress isn't happening fast enough. I'm not homophobic. I've never been afraid of homosexuals; the truth is, whatever two people do of their bedroom is, in my opinion, their business. And just by being this post , we all hold the right to pursue and share the love of another we deeply value. Albeit, we now have made progress, my experience the other day clearly demonstrates we have not made enough.
Over the last week, I've read several articles illustrating the positive correlation between homosexuality and suicide. I find this anathema, as we're a meant to be a "civilized" country which espouses "life, liberty, along with the pursuit of happiness." Obviously, we're failing. It's time to please take a stand; it's time to try and talk with people unique of ourselves. Not only do we, straight America, have to support gays and lesbians pursue their constitutional directly to pursue happiness, we have to support other taboo groups, most of whom and we don't completely understand or know much about. As a society, we should support law abiding citizens whom elect to live different lifestyles, for example the BDSM community, leather community, polyamory community, along with other fetish lifestyle communities.
Yes, unfortunately we cannot have accept these different lifestyles, however they, as outlined by our values as a nation, contain the to pursue happiness, and they also should be able to accomplish that without intimidation, coercion, or duress. We know a large number of whom are on the fringes of society, for reasons uknown, feel isolated. And because of this, they are hopeless, unwanted, and pursue suicide, a permanent solution with a temporary problem.
Please, keep an open mind and treat everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, with respect and dignity. Consider offering them your friendship as opposed to your ridicule. We owe this to ourselves as being a people along with a nation. We should make this happen because lives hang within the balance, no one should die given that they believe they do not participate in the collective beehive we call the United States.
