WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT AT YOUR EMERGENCY DENTAL APPOINTMENT?
When you have a dental emergency, it can be both scary and confusing, with little idea of what will happen when you arrive at an emergency dentist. There are many processes that will remain the same as a regular dental appointment, with some that will change depending upon what the emergency is. When You Arrive

During some world events, there are extra steps to be taken upon arrival at, or before arriving at, your dentist. This can be completed quickly and occurs while the room is being set up to provide the care that you require.

Upon arrival at the dental office, they will require information on what the emergency is, if there is pain or discomfort, fever, heat from the sore tooth or gums, and if there has been a trauma injury to the tooth or mouth or if you suspect an infection has occurred. This information will guide how the dentist proceeds to assess your concerns and create a treatment plan.

Trauma Injuries

When you arrive at an emergency dentist with an injury related to a trauma to the mouth they will begin with an exam of the area. They will check for bleeding and see if the tooth is stable. This may involve an x-ray to check the stability of the roots and if they are still attached to the tooth, or if it will require extraction. Where a tooth can be stabilized and kept they will provide guidance on how to care for the tooth in the next few days to give it the best chance of survival. Any cracks, cavities, or damaged fillings can be repaired normally. If the tooth is too damaged and cannot be saved or the roots have been damaged and can no longer hold the tooth, it may be extracted or scheduled for extraction later. Any risk of infection will be treated with antibiotics, and you may receive a mouthwash to help avoid infection. Some treatments can be completed at the same appointment while others will require a return for another appointment to complete treatment.

Dental Infections

If it is determined that you have an infection in the teeth or gums it will be treated with an antibiotic. To determine this the site will be examined, and an x-ray may be taken to determine if there is an infection in the roots of the teeth. The area will be gently probed to check for pus and swelling, and they may check for warmth or heat from the area and through the cheek. Antibiotics will be prescribed and possibly a pain killer to assist with the pain while the infection is decreased.

Your emergency dental appointment will in many ways be the same as any other appointment. They will check the area for trauma injury or potential infections and a treatment plan will be created.
