Existing Clock Research Homework

Existing Clock Example 1:
The Railway Clock

Source: Friends and family,
with a little help from
www.railwayclocks.net
Railway Clocks were traditional clocks used originally in train stations all around England to standardize time; before this happened, time according to all train station’s clocks (in the image above you can see train station Paddington’s clock) was different and inaccurate, so engineers thought that one design- a ‘master clock’- that told one single time would be a practical and helpful design that could aid commuters in their everyday travels and officially ‘standardize’ the exact moments for other transportation areas.
It has taught me that clock designs can revert back to their original simplicity and still be an intricate and carefully- thought out overall product design.
Existing Clock Example: 2
The Atomic Clock

Source: www.powerplus.nl

An Atomic Clock very much relies on Science. However, this clever modern Atomic time- teller is water- powered and discovers the time by connecting to a nearby radio station. Atomic Clocks differ in their unique ways of cleverly reaching the time.
Maybe this method of connecting to the time won’t quite be possible in class, but I love the modern and curved feel of the clock. It is in a metallic silver and I learnt to possibly try and interpret this clock’s quiet urban feel into my own design.

Originally, the Atomic Clock was a large and confusing mechanism and there are still lots of models in the world much larger than the ‘average clock’ size. This design required many talented scientists and engineers to achieve the Atomic Clock as it is today.

Recycled Sanyo Clock

Source: www.hongkiat.com, etsy.com/uk

I love the retro feel of these designs; put together using only a recycled record and turntable, they are both fantastic for the environment and they could represent a love of music or arts. With the quirky design, it has taught me that I can experiment with different feels and vibes from unique time periods as well as using inspiration from here and now to create a one of a kind design. I can also use more neutral colours and shades in my overall product to allow the true beauty of the design to shine through, instead of solely looking toward the colour combination.

Existing Clock Example: 4
The Pendulum Clock

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendulum_clock
A Pendulum Clock is a clever and efficient time- telling device, invented in 1656 by Christopher Huygens, it was found in houses, factories, offices and railroad stations until the 1930s. It helped improve the quick pace of the Industrial Revolution.
Pendulum Clocks are now mostly kept for their decorative and antique value, proving to be a valuable addition to a historian’s collection.
Pendulum Clocks, back when and before the Industrial Revolution, were not only presented to express the time, but also to show the wealth and status of a household; such as the ‘Act of Parliament Clock’, the ‘Banjo Clock’ and most famously the ‘Longcase Clock’ (also known as The Grandfather Clock): these were just a few clock designs that dictated the culture and value of an everyday household.

I love the old, rustic look of the model on the left, and I will try and generate this grand, traditional vibe in my own work, finishing the overall design off with an antique, vintage feel.

Existing Clock Example: 5
The ‘Retro Clock’

Source: Magazines, Etsy.com/uk
The ‘Retro Clock’ is an interesting clock usually subjected around bright colours and patterns, and has a fantastic range of sequences, reflections, transformations, transitions and other fascinating mathematical terms used to create an eye- catching design.
Some of these colourful clocks had inspiration plucked from the 1970s or 1980s, with similar shades or colour schemes. They are all quirky and unique, with fantastic colours and patterns; I will try to interpret this uniqueness in my own design and hopefully will create an individual clock at the end of the day.

Existing Clock Example: 6
The Acrylic Laser- Cut Clock

Source: My own experience, Etsy,com/uk

I love these acrylic clocks, they have a fun vibe and accuracy, but specifically because acrylic is a prime material that we will be using to create our clocks, so these amazing designs may be in my reach if I use a tool like a fret saw, to create an ultimately polished look.
I may use these designs as an outline for my actual finished design, inserting the ‘dog’ theme into my inspiration, partly because I have my own puppy at home, but also because finishing the challenging piece will be very a very proud moment for me as there are lots of difficult curves and angles to overcome.

Existing Clock Example: 7
The Bicycle Wheel Clock

Source: etsy.com/uk

I specifically chose this clock design as I loved the unique range of angles and ‘zigzag’ effects on the finished product, modelled as a bicycle wheel.

I think it would be a difficult task to endure, but creating the finished look with that
many angles and curves would be very impressive, and it would demonstrate the ability of cutting around inconvenient areas well.
