The Benefits of a Miter Gauge
When you work with woodworking projects, you will probably need to do some measurement a few times during your project. A miter gauge is a helpful tool for measuring how much stock, if any, needs to be cut off at various points in the project. A miter gauge measures angles of cut and displays the resulting distance between the actual cut and the planned angle. Miter gauges are especially useful for large projects where you may need to do a lot of measuring. If you plan on cutting materials such as plywood, veneer, or sheet material, then this is an essential tool.

A miter gauge is connected to the table saw with a steel bolt and can be turned clockwise or counterclockwise to allow for slow or fast turning of the blade. The only disadvantage is that a miter gauge can only be turned to cut at pre-determined angles. This includes the wide, flat angled cuts on almost every table saw, as well as crosscut blades. The best option for woodworkers is to use a miter gauge with a blade that can be mounted inside the table saw's blade socket, thus allowing it to be freely turned without affecting the performance of the saw itself.

Miter gauges are often used to crosscut timber, and have a piece of thin stock attached to a wooden block. The thickness of the stock is selected so that each cut is at least half the distance from the nearest edge. The two pieces of wood are slid down the jigsaw and pushed together until they are flush with the end of the stock. The purpose is to create a cut line along the outside of the stock, just deep enough to poke through the jigsaw blade. Each cut is made by angling the saw's blade so that it cuts across this line, rather than along it.

Some of the most popular miter saws in use today feature built-in auto braking mechanisms. An automatic braking system operates very much like the mechanism found in table saws. When the trigger is released, the fence and blade quickly grab onto each other, stopping the saw in its tracks and preventing the cut from being completed. Most automatic braking systems are controlled by the user and are usually available as an option when purchasing the saw. The majority of saws featuring auto braking capabilities can also be set to automatically halt the blade when the fence and blade become free of wood.

Most miter gauges feature a sliding cutting deck which is located between the blade and the fence. It is here that the miter gauges separate themselves from other saws. One of the most important aspects of making cuts with a miter gauge is keeping your hands away from the work surface when you perform the cut. The blade is in constant contact with your skin, and if you happen to lean towards the wrong side while making the cut - or simply try to touch the blade - you will find yourself with very sore fingers. In addition, if you happen to lean too far away from the work surface when making cuts, the saw itself may become damaged.

To aid in keeping your miter gauge and your hands away from your workplace, many table saws feature a built-in rip fence. The rip fence helps keep the blade from cutting past the edges of your workpiece. In the past, it was common for a miter to be performed on a wood table; however, since most tables now feature a steel construction, making cuts on soft woods such as pine are no longer feasible. In order to compensate for this, many saw manufacturers have designed saw fences which feature sharpened edges on both the top and bottom.

Miter gauges are not only used for table saw blades; they are also used in a variety of saw table construction. A miter slot is the section of a table saw blade that contains numerous tiny bites. Each of these bites represents the cut area that is being cut. By using a series of small miter slots, you can quickly and efficiently cut through a wide range of materials. Billious However, because the blade is held in this position for a longer period of time, using a miter gauge is often times much more economical than having multiple miter slots installed into a table saw blade.

Miter gauges can also be useful for precise crosscutting as well as other types of miter cuts. Crosscut tables are generally made up of a long metal rod attached to a guide. Using a miter gauge on a crosscut table helps ensure that all of the teeth are perfectly in line with each other. Although precision crosscut saws are generally expensive, they are also among the most reliable and durable machines that you could purchase. With a miter gauge installed, you will be able to make accurate, clean cuts every single time.
