WHY YOU SHOULD KEEP ATTAINING KNOWLEDGE
If you think you are old enough and your days of learning are over, you think wrong. Learning at a young age is only a formality, and assuming you know enough is arrogance at best. It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim, and he who passes knowledge to those who do not deserve it is like one who puts a necklace of jewels, pearls, and gold around the neck of swine.”(Sunan of Ibn Majah, Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 224)

In this article we will try to remember some of the reasons why you should go back to the process of learning and then applying the Quran and Sunnah.

1. It was the first command sent to the Prophet PBUH from Allah SWT
“Proclaim! (Or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created – Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful, He Who taught (the use of) the pen, Taught man that which he knew not” [Quran, 96:1-5].

These verses were the first ones to be revealed upon Muhammad PBUH. It signifies that the first duty of a Muslim is to read in the name of Allah SWT. The verses also imply that it does not matter if you know or do not know how to read or write, you should try to do it. The Holy Prophet PBUH himself did not know how to read or write, but Allah SWT gifted him the ability regardless.

2. The Holy Prophet PBUH gave knowledge value
The Prophet PBUH made it clear that whoever has more knowledge of the Quran and Sunnah is the one to lead Muslims. That person is also going to have the highest authority at home. Thus, one should not assume he knows enough. We should continue to attain more knowledge if we want to be held in high regard and have an authoritative position among other Muslims and be closer to Allah SWT.

Abu Mas’ud narrated that:
Allah’s Messenger said: “The one who recites most of the Book of Allah is to lead the people (in prayers.) If they are equal in recitation, then the most knowledgeable in the Sunnah among them. And [Sahih Muslim] is not to be led in prayer in the place of his authority, and his spot of esteem in his home is not to be sat on without his permission. “(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 235)


3. To be better in worship
We should not only continue to worship but also keep learning how to do it better. [Sahih Muslim] can learn to do more worship, be a better Muslim, and serve Allah SWT better. Studying is an active part of worship. It might not be as convenient for you to learn now with your other responsibilities as an adult, but the struggle is a crucial part of being a Muslim, and Allah SWT rewards us for it immensely.
Continuing to learn can keep us grounded. It can save us from the influence of Shaitan and remind us of our purpose in this world.


4. [Sahih Muslim] will face new challenges in life
Knowledge is your weapon against all the hardships and evil. There will be many instances in life where you will face a situation not stated in the Quran or Sunnah directly. It would help if you studied further to tackle these challenges.
It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘One Faqih (knowledgeable man) is more formidable against the Shaitan than one thousand devoted worshipers.’” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 222)
