Who is a boom operator and what do they do?
Performing Live Multi-Track Recordings with A Boom Operator

(External microphone attached with a boom pole)

A boom operator is a person who holds and moves an additional microphone around during live performances in order to capture the sounds that originate from different locations within the performance space because they happen.

The role of the boom operator may be either performed by one or more sound engineers/mixers taking care of site.
The audio signal captured by both external microphones are generally mixed together before being recorded onto a DAW software session using timecode generated from SMPTE to initiate the recording.

Suspended microphone

The very first microphone is generally suspended above the performers and moves around in such a manner that it remains pointed directly at them while they perform.

Recording studios in Los Angeles try this to ensure that no-one instrument or performer's sound accidentally drowns out any other. To achieve this, some mixers might also make use of a stereo bar to help keep the signals from two or more microphones separated (not shown below).

This kind of boom is now extremely popular amongst audio engineers working within live concerts where you can find multiple performers and sound sources performing simultaneously on stage.

Popularity

Outside of the usage however, its popularity has waned when compared with microphones attached to smaller booms since it doesn't provide as much freedom during post production editing to adjust the sound via different instruments or voices in post-production.

In LA recording studios the second microphone is usually positioned on a tiny boom pole and mixed alongside the very first mic to recapture other sounds within the performance space.

It's then up to the mixer to choose simply how much of each mic's signal s/he really wants to be captured just before mixing them together (pre-mix) and eventually recording onto a DAW software session using timecode generated from SMPTE to initiate audio recording.
