Great Atlantic Way

This Is Noteworthy , a road so beautiful it deserves a love letter. Endless sea views, grizzly cattle, historic mine works, heathland, twisty-bits, up bits, rocky bits, down bits — what’s not to like?

This route is about cycling for its own sake, about the journey and not the destination. Let us guide you on the day out that takes in one of the worlds finest cycling roads. Expect this 55km trip to take between 3 and 5 hours with plenty of stops for taking photos.

Heading north from Penzance towards Madron, you climb gently towards heathland and follow the gently Try Valley — the roads are generally too narrow for fast-moving traffic and you can take it easy.

After 25 minutes or so, you will be rewarded with your first views of the north coast — specifically Treen village and the famous, bright yellow Gurnard’s Head pub.

Now you are on the B3306 with its endless sea views. Note, it can be busy with traffic, but often fairly slow. It’s also popular with road-bike riders and motorcyclists for whom it’s a ‘bucket-list’ location.

If you didn’t stop for a pint at the Gurnard’s, stop at Rosemergy Cream Teas for scones and tea: they do an ‘ansom job. From there, the road bobs and weaves, but the climbs are short — the famous ‘Tin Coast’ historic mining ruins scatter the right hand side of the road, which at certain points you might share with the local cows!

The stop at the Pendeen Lighthouse is a great for photos. Then onwards to the 1.5km (fairly rough) path that takes you along the world-famous tin-coast trail, at high season you should expect this to be busy, so don’t take the trail if you are worried about time!

Onward, skirting past St. Just, the riding is easy. You will cruise through farmland until you reach the Land’s End airport. The B-road to St Buyrun is not normally busy. The route home takes you down (thankfully) a fairly steep hill from Paul (with excellent pub) to Mousehole village, and then it’s an easy mostly downhill curve home to Penzance. If you feel hungry, it’s easy to drop down to Newlyn or Penzance seafront for a drink or a rewarding snack.

Our 0% beer, brews and brownies will be waiting!
