Dalam mitologi Nordik, dikenal adanya sembilan dunia, yang mana sembilan dunia tersebut dihubungkan oleh pohon Yggdrasil. Dalam mitologi Nordik, pohon Yggdrasil merupakan pusat dunia. Pada cabang-cabang dan akar-akarnya terdapat dunia-dunia yang berbeda, yaitu:
• Asgard, dunia para Æsir atau golongan dewa-dewa tinggi dan yang paling berkuasa. Asgard terletak pada cabang Yggdrasil di sebelah atas yang dialui oleh mata air Urd.
• Vanaheim, dunia para Vanir atau golongan dewa-dewi kecil. Letaknya berdekatan dengan Asgard di lingkungan para dewa.
• Alfheim, dunia para Elf atau ras dewa kecil pengatur kesuburan.
• Midgard, dunia manusia sebagai dunia makhluk yang tidak abadi.
• Jötunheimr, dunia para Jotun atau para raksasa.
• Svartálfheim, dunia para Svartálfar (bahasa Inggris: Swart elfs/elves) atau Dökkálfar (bahasa Inggris: Dark elfs/elves) yaitu kaum elf dari kegelapan.
• Niddhavellir, dunia para Dwarf atau orang kerdil. Mereka tinggal di gua atau di bawah tanah sebagai penambang yang mahir dan ahli membuat peralatan dan senjata dari logam.
• Niflheim, dunia bawah tanah yang dingin, rumah para Jotun (raksasa) es, dikuasai oleh Hel, anak perempuan Loki
