An exoskeleton is actually the outer protective shell that covers and supports the body of an animal, such as a human or a leopard, rather than its inner skeleton. In use, some of the largest types of exoskeletons are called "spiders" because of their great size relative to their size. The Paexo exoskeleton, the original model from which this type of exoskeleton was designed, is still being used today because of the superior level of comfort it offers users. This article will describe the construction and basic anatomy of this piece of equipment.
The word exoskeleton comes from two Latin words - exos, meaning "outward" and skeletal, meaning "of bones." The outer layer of the Paexo exoskeleton consists of a heavy duty nylon membrane, which is reinforced by polyethylene mesh stitched into the exterior. A mesh front section is then attached to this outer protective membrane, creating a sturdy hard exoskeleton for the cicada to inhabit. The mesh stitched portions can be adjusted to conform to any natural body curve or natural walking motion of the cicada. Cicada moths (Cimicidae) are the most common moths that utilize this hard exoskeleton, which makes them very easy to identify.

Cicada moths are naturally produced very tough exoskeletons. When they are exposed to air, they produce an off white powdery substance that prevents any type of damage from occurring to their shell and then produces a type of defensive coating on the inside of their shell that serves as a second defense layer against predators. These protective chemicals make the organisms quite difficult to catch prey with a regular spear, and the organisms can even stand up to high temperatures. These factors make the moths some of the most durable insects in the insect kingdom and have been used by hunters for centuries as a favored method of catching moths.
