<p class="p__0">3 miles each way, with an ascent of 2250 feet. Include in the closest loop within the park, at 3. 4 miles, and you have a long 18 mile hike. Walton Tract area is below. Scroll in, and you can see the pedestrian bridge over the river. Treking simply a portion of this path from the north is worthwhile, even without reaching Douthat.</p>

<p class="p__1">The northern access starts at the Walton System. There is area for lots of cars here, and no one else was parked here when we were here. From the parking loop, head down an old road past a closed gate, going west. The highlight of this part of trail is the bridge over the Cowpasture River, which is right at the start of the path.</p>

<p class="p__2">This section of path is in fact the Beards Mountain Spur Path (# 459A). The blue blazed trail crosses the bridge and starts heading northeast - the opposite direction of Douthat - in the past striking a ridge and swiveling southwest. After rising along the sides of steep slopes, the Beards Mtn Spur Path ends at the Beards Mtn Trail.</p>

<p class="p__3">8 miles to the Walton System, but my GPS read 2. 0 miles. Pass a point with good views to the northwest. The trail ascends through a fairly open area which is likely overgrown throughout the summer season. Related Source Here from the leading look east towards Rough Mountain. <p class="p__4">This trail comes down west to a Forest Service road and is described in information later on in this post. Ascend to the top of an unnamed peak and enjoy views to the northwest, towards Warm Springs Mountain. Leave the George Washington National park and participate in Douthat State Park. The boundary is marked by a foot high concrete post and several yellow limit marker indications on trees.</p>

<p class="p__5">The Beards Mtn Path ends at a crossway with Douthat's Mountain Top Path. This crossway is not kept in mind by a trail indication, so it would be harder to know where to go if you approached initially from Douthat's routes, instead of approaching on the Beards Mtn Trail. I had actually hiked the Mountain Top Trail previously, and constantly assumed that Beards Mtn Path converged further south, where there is another concrete post and a sign mentioning that the trail has reached the border of the GWNF.</p>
