The Puritan values that affected American society in both positive and negative ways continue to influence our nation today. The American concept of limited government stems from the Puritan community. Puritans believed that no single person or group of people should be trusted to run the government the puritans create the form of democracy used by the American government today Many of the Puritan colonies were established by people wishing to codify and unite religion with democracy (government) and the colonist were governed by members of the puritan populous. The Puritan beliefs were affected in many ways due to the fact that the colony laws were directly influenced by the Puritan system of religious beliefs. It affected women and men. Women were not allowed to participate in politics, they had no right to leadership roles in the church and had no right of expression. Also, men who weren’t participants of the Puritan beliefs didn’t have the right to vote nor could they own properties of any matter. The Puritans were very cold-hearted to the members of their communities by using public punishments, ex-communication, and even banishments due to the unwavering faith of those who didn’t participate in the Puritan religion. They connected politics with their Puritan beliefs and influenced in-laws by using their religious points of view.
