An Introduction to Lomilomi and Native Massage of Oceania
At The Lomilomi and Native Massage of Oceania, edited by Diana Kerr, the contributors to this publication bring together countless experience and imagination to present an original view about the healing power of lomilomi. The publication includes essays that explore the history of lomi-lomi, the doctrine behind it, the tradition of lomi-lomi, the healing forces of the shell and the tradition of the healing massage. Illustrations and photographs support the text and also add to its visual appeal. The editors provide various readings, each focusing on a remedy or a religious objective.

The book incorporates Hawaiian curing ceremonies that are devoted to the importance of the art of lomi-lomi. It describes the symbolic meaning behind each ritual, including the relationship between the sun and the entire body. The examples include a shaman in a cure trance, and the holy lotus blossom. The editors also describe the many types of lomi-lomi and provide examples of every one, for instance, specific therapeutic effects and reasons for using each one.

The usage of lomi-lomi in Hawaiian cultural and religious rituals is documented throughout the book. Examples are a leisiperrimo (traditional manner ) ceremony, in which guests receive a loofah soaked in green soap and wrapped in a sarong; and hale po'e (hygiene and cleanliness in ancient times), where guests warm in warm water out of a stone basin known as a hale po'e. Illustrations show the tools and utensils used during these rituals and describe their importance. The publication concludes with an introduction to the healing properties of lomi-lomi.

In his introduction, Dr. Morris explains the foundation of the custom of lomi-lomi and describes the advantages of this ancient procedure. He's an account of the source of lomi-lomi and its meaning in ancient civilization and describes the use of the sacred lotus blossom and its symbolism from lomi-lomi and other Hawaiian massage therapies. While it's been claimed that the lotus is actually a creation of their Oriental, Dr. Morris supplies archaeological evidence supporting his argument. He describes the many types of lomi-lomi, including the common methods of massage that is Hawaiian, and explains each technique in excellent detail.

1 chapter focuses on the use of Oahu massage in Hawaii. Dr. Morris explains the 2 forms of Oahu massage, one used by the tourists and some other performed by therapists at the state college and private practices. The descriptions are detailed and descriptive and cover the vital locations, like the spine, shoulder, arms, neck, and facearea. Examples of the descriptions of methods include putting the palms in the center, using the pliers to excite the nostrils, rolling the ankle and massaging the thighs, applying pressure to the navel, applying pressure to the abdomen and the groin, applying pressure to the lower spine, holding the knee at the fist, palm manipulation and twisting. Each chapter ends with a short description of the technique and the advantages related to each one.

Another important component of the book is the massage therapist's manual. This is a short work detailing the proper way to do lomi-lomi and other Hawaiian massage techniques. It includes the best way to get a client and where to choose massage treatment during the day and through the night. Additionally, it has important information about pricing and also what to wear in case you decide to be a massage therapist. The book comprises photos and a table of contents, making it an extremely simple to browse workbook.

Lomilomi and Native Massage of Oceania are a very thorough manual that covers every area of Hawaiian massage therapy. Even though nearly all the novel is composed in English, there are several pages which were translated into many languages, especially German and Thai. There are also a number of pages that have been specially created to coincide with the different massage treatments found in the publication. These contain an introduction to the significance of body consciousness, the several types of massage therapy practiced in Hawaii and Oceania, descriptions of many types of hand placements used, as well as the use of flower therapy. The publication also has several pages which describe the history of the art of massage along with the source of lomilomi.

The very best portion of this book, however, is the bonus chapters which Lomilomi and Native massage therapists may get as members of this online Registry. They include short biographies of those massage therapists, who in turn take the opportunity to write a concise paragraph about themselves. Every one of these bonus features make Lomilomi and Native massage therapy a special and valuable resource. So as to be a part of this Registry, though, a person needs to pay a one-time enrollment fee. This small fee allows the individual access to the webpages that include information not just on Lomilomi and Native Hawaiian massage therapists but also regarding massage therapy generally.
