Tyr adalah Dewa perang dan keberanian menurut kepercayaan bangsa Nordik. Tyr adalah versi Jermanik dari dewa langit India-Eropa Dyeus Piter, yang merupakan dewa sama seperti dewa Yunani, Zeus, dan dewa Romawi, Jupiter, dan dewa India, Dyeus Pita. Namun tak seperti Zeus dan Jupiter, Tyr bukanlah pemimpin para dewa - pemimpin para dewa adalah Odin. Barangkali pada masa awal agama Jermanik, Tyr adalah pemimpin para dewa, namun kemudian dia digantikan oleh Odin. Beberapa kisah Jermanik masa akhir menyebutkan Tyr sebagai putra Odin, namun kemungkinan sejarahnya berawal dengan kebalikannya. Dewa India-Eropa seringkali menggulingkan ayah mereka, seperti Zeus menggulingkan Kronos dan Indra menggulingkan Dyeus Pita di India.
Tyr mengorbankan tangannya kepada serigala yang bernama Fenris sehingga ia hanya memiliki satu tangan. Dalam Edda Islandia, dia merupakan putera Odin dan Hymir. Ini berarti Tyr merupakan saudara dari Thor. Edda Islandia adalah kumpulan karya sastra yang menceritakan dewa-dewi kepercayaan Bangsa Islandia. Kurang lebih sama seperti Theogonia karya Hesiodos yang menceritakan penciptaan dunai dan asal usul para dewa Yunani.
