There were some attempts to build a new turkish music in term of the early years of republic. These attempts are important parts of project of westernization. Because it was helping in cultural transformation.

Efforts for westernization of turkish music began from 19th century ottoman term. In this term western music was common among ottoman elits. Also a royal band established as the symbol of ottoman modernization and operas, musicals and theatres were played. Republic's approach to music shaped with discussion in the late ottoman term. These discussions about that if the classical ottoman music or folk music will be the source of new national music. Founders of the republic did not accept ottoman classical music. They choose folk music source. Ziya gökalp suggested that folk music should be arranged with western music.

That western music would be the music of new turkish civilization and it would not be foreign to turks.

The efforts for creating a national identity republic was trying to remove the culture of ottomans. Ottoman classical music was for elites, not for public. Also it was including many different languages in it. If we consider simplification studies of language, it was one reason why ottoman classical music did not accepted.

Some music institutions abolished and some of them established. These institutions send students to europe for education as music teacher. Also a lot of expert come and work as teacher. These were escaped from war in europe. Turkish republic was building a system which is westernized in music like low education and woman right.

Founders tried to transform ottoman culture which has a lot of different culture and religion to the culture which is a part of west. They considered modernization and they built western style turkish national music.
