Are you planning a trip far from home? Make sure to load up with digital content before the WiFi stops working
I'd like to tell you the story of my last Arctic boat trip. It sounded incredible, National Geographic journey thru the ice and back with polar bears and many more creatures. There would be ice everywhere eyes could see as well as snow and ice all around. Man-made machines would fight the elements to get through the frigid north. It was breathtaking, as if an epic fight against the weather, the north and the pole.

I was advised to carry the maximum amount of technology I could fit in my suitcases. I did manage to pack my laptop and added a big screen to expand my working space. It was all electric according to the information they gave me. I was unsure what was about to occur. I was unaware that two days into the 14-day trip , I'd be without Internet connection and disappear from the face of the Earth for the remaining 10 days. It happened. I was just devastated. No trip, no matter how long or challenging will result in a loss of connection from the internet. In addition, I've got unfinished business to deal with in the coming week, but I also didn't prepare myself for the downtime.

Today, no one cares if they have to be offline. Internet is available wherever you happen to be. If your internet connection is not working at home or is not working, just go to a McDonalds near by and take advantage of their free WiFi to access the information you need. It is also possible to bring your laptop and relax in Starbucks all day. North of the border, there's no café or restaurant to assist you. You are a long way away from the nearest power source. There isn't any free Internet available. In such a situation, there are two options for escape that you can take: either prepare to be disconnected from your home or get satellite access.

I can't afford a satellite phone, it is too costly, particularly to use it for Internet access. However, I'm going to build a huge audio and video library for the next time before I travel to the far reaches of the world without Internet access. Last time, I only had two songs. They were both downloaded in a sly way at the time, and I was limited to 3 jazz tracks and one famous song I didn't even know the name of. It's that simple. 4 songs for two weeks of complete silence. If I had known this was going to be the case, I would have prepared. I would have filled my laptop with TV shows, movies and bunch of music videos as well as audio files loaded with music and podcasts. I would spend long hours listening to my most-loved podcasts. It's easy to download podcasts, convert them to mp3 and save them to my computer. It is then easy to relax in my bed and listen to whatever music I would like to hear at home, but don't have the time to. This was meant to be my golden hour or two weeks of gold. But it ended up being two weeks of looking at the ceiling and waiting for passengers whenever the sound of a whirring in the corridors.


It was empty literally and also metaphorically. Never have I ever been so bored. The ice was too thick. Being aware that it could create problems, the boat had the tow back to civilization. Although this was not surprising, it meant that many hours could have been spent listening to and watching DIY videos, podcasts on home fix or simply enjoying music. Next time, I'll convert YouTube videos from mp4 format to MP3 format using my laptop. yt converter ooo Bring them along and you can listen to your favourite music right on your laptop. Music never makes you feel down. Keep in mind that Hulu and Netflix apps can download films and shows for you to watch offline, those can also be brought to the long journey across the arctic.
