코로나19 확산 영향으로 여느 흔한 드라이브스루 행사장처럼 발길이 뜸 할 줄 알았던 예상과 달리 진안군 부귀면 마이산김치공장에서 개최됐음에도 하루 종일 꾸준하게 방문 차량이 있을 정도로 호응이 좋았다.

오는 10월 1일부터 수입 배추김치 위생 관리가 엄격해진다. 배추김치 수입 규모에 따라 단계적으로 '해썹(식품안전관리인증기준, HACCP)' 제도를 의무 적용할 예정이다.

시장 반입물량도 줄었다. 알몸 절임배추 파문 이후 소비가 줄어 배추 시세가 좋지 않자 출하를 미루거나 포기한 농가들이 많아진 영향으로 풀이된다. 대아청과에 따르면 15∼20일 저장배추의 전국 도매시장 일평균 반입량은 약 680t으로, 평년 약 840t 대비 20% 감소한 것으로 조사됐다. 저장배추 물량이 평년보다 4∼5% 적다는 점을 감안해도 반입량 감소폭이 예사롭지 않다는 분석이다.

대아청과 관계자는 “식당에서 김치를 기피하는 현상이 나타나자 중도매인이 배추 발주량을 줄였고, 산지에서는 값이 떨어지자 출하량을 줄인 상황”이라며 “2005년 중국산 김치 기생충 사태처럼 배추 소비위축이 장기화될 수도 있다”고 우려했다.

배추 소비는 위축된 반면 알타리무·무 등 대체 품목들은 소비가 다소 늘며 값도 반등한 상태다. 식당 등에서 열무김치·무채 등 배추김치를 대체할 밑반찬을 선호하고 있어서다.

3월 중순 6000원대까지 떨어졌던 가락시장의 무 20㎏ 상품 한상자당 평균 경락값은 29일 8399원을 기록하며 오름세를 보였다. 열무 가격도 1.5㎏ 한단당 1978원으로 3월 중순 1600원대보다 소폭 올랐다.

수원과 성남에서 해장국집을 운영하는 김모씨(34)는 “기존에는 배추김치와 깍두기만 제공했는데, 최근엔 배추김치를 안 먹는 손님을 위해 무채를 추가했다”며 “날이 따뜻해지면 열무김치도 추가할 계획”이라고 말했다.

김진구 대아청과 영업3팀장은 “김치공장을 중심으로 알타리무와 열무 등의 수요가 늘었고 앞으로도 배추를 대용할 만한 품목의 소비가 활발해질 것”이라고 전망했다.
