A Japanese general who lived from 1884 through 1948, Hideki Tojo of Imperial Japanese army was also the leader of Talsei Youkusankai and 40th Prime Minister of Japan. He was prime minister at a time when Japan was facing the turmoil of the Second World War during 1941-43.

Brief Background

Born in Kojimachi district of Tokyo in 1884 to Lieutenant General of Imperial Japanese Army, Hidenori Tojo, he received treatments as well as rights as the eldest son since both his elder brothers were dead. In 1909 he married Katsuko Ito and had three sons and four daughters from her.


Military Career Highlights

By 1933, Tojo was already a Major General and worked as Chief of Personnel Department in the Army Ministry. Highlights of his military career are

Promoted to the rank of Major General in 1933.

Appointed the commander of IJA 24th Infantry Brigade in August 1934.

He assumed the command of Kempeitai or Kwangtung Army in Marchuria.

With a reputation for having sharp and legalistic mind he was known as Razor in the friend's circles.

He foiled a coup attempt in the military in 1936 with the help of Shigeru Honjo This gave Tojo a leadership position.

He was promoted as the Chief of Staff of Kwangtung Army in the year 1937.

His only combat experience was the leading of the 1st independent mixed brigade in operation Chahar. Interestingly, this was the only combat experience he had.

With the start of the second Sino-Japanese War he was further elevated to the rank of a General.

He was called back to Japan in 1938 and remained there as the Chief of Aviation till 1940.

Army minister in the second Fumimaro Konoe Cabinet, Tojo continued to support the tripartite pact with Germany and expanding the war against China.

In his eventful career, Tojo held the posts of Prime Minister and concurrently the posts of Home Minister, Foreign Minister, as well as Commerce Minister.
