THEMATIC
CONCEPTS: NIGHT
1. Social Inequality: the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different
social positions or statuses within a group or society (ie. Jews, Poles, Gypsies, etc. )
2. Courage: the power or quality of dealing with or facing danger, fear, pain
3. Dehumanization: making a person or group appear less than human in order to
make it easier to destroy or subjugate them.
4. Indifference: the lack of feeling or care toward a subject.
5. Identity: one's sense of self and belonging.
6. survival/mortality: life and death and the balance between the two
7. freedom/confinement: what constitutes freedom or confinement?

COURAGE

Courage is doing what's right despite the moral and social consequences.
If you have courage in the face of adversity, you can fight through difficult
situations.
Courage allows someone to push through challenges and hardships to
achieve the end goal.
Being courageous is standing up for what you believe in.

INDEPENDENT CLAUSES

DEPENDENT CLAUSES

…ARE NOT complete sentences
Ex: Because the worms were working diligently……

Components of Shaffer:
Topic sentence/claim statement is always the first sentence in a body paragraph - tells the
subject of the paragraph
Concrete details - quotes from the text you use to support the topic sentence/claim
Commentary - your analysis of the concrete detail in relation to the claim
Concluding sentence - wraps up your paragraph and can provide a transition to the next
paragraph
Thesis statement - controlling idea of the whole essay - comes at the end of your introductory
paragraph
