Let me tell you about a trip I took last year aboard a cruise ship through the Arctic. It sounded amazing, National Geographic's trip thru the Arctic Ice with polar bears. It sounded like a magnificent undertaking, an epic fight against the north, the weather, the pole.

I was told to take with me all the technology I could fit in my luggage. I was able to fit my laptop, and also add an enormous screen to extend my workspace. The the electricity was not a problem. I was not quite sure what was in store for me. I was unaware that I'd lose my internet connection two days into my 14-day journey and disappear from the Earth for the next ten days. When it happened I was devastated. Any trip, no matter how difficult or remote, should be an unexpected disconnect from the world of technology and communication, especially in the 21st century. Not only do I have unfinished work to handle during the next week, but I also didn't prepare myself for the time off.


It doesn't matter if people need to shut off the internet. Internet is everywhere. If your home connection has temporary problems, it is possible to go to an nearby McDonalds and utilize their free WiFi connection to do what you want to do. It is also possible to bring your laptop and relax in Starbucks all day long. There's no restaurant or cafe that can provide electricity in the north. It's far from any electricity source. There's not a free Internet. There are only two options in these situations: get a satellite connection or turn off the internet.

A sat-phone can be expensive and I can't pay for it. Before I go out in the unknown, I will have a huge audio and video library. Last time , I only had 2 songs. The songs were downloaded earlier in the day, so all I could listen to were three jazz songs and one I had no idea what it was called. That's all. 4 tunes for two weeks of no-thingness. If I knew that this was going to be the situation, I would be prepared. I would have filled my laptop with TV shows movies, music videos and simply audio files that contained songs and podcasts. My favorite podcasts would be my soundtrack for life. It's simple to download them, convert into mp3s and then save to my PC. Then, I can simply lie in my bed and listen to the podcasts that I enjoy at home. It would be my gold hour which is about two weeks' worth of gold. But, it ended up being two weeks of gazing at a ceiling and running to catch passengers whenever there was a noise from the corridors.

The trip was devoid literally and figuratively. I've never felt so bored. The ice was way too thick. I was aware that this was likely to cause the issue.
