Let me tell you my experience from my most recent Arctic cruise. It sounded incredible, National Geographic journey thru the ice, back, with polar bears and many other creatures. There was going to be the ice where eyes can see snow, ice, and ice everywhere. I was told by my supervisor to bring with me every piece of technology I could. To increase the space I work in, I packed my laptop. They assured me that electricity was not a problem. I was unsure what was going to happen. I didn't realize that I'd be disconnected from my internet just two days into my 14 day trip , and then disappear from the Earth for the following 10 days. I was absolutely stunned when this was over. I was shocked that any travel, no matter how long or difficult, could cause a sudden disconnect from the world of technology. Nobody cares if you have to leave your home. Internet is everywhere and if your home network has problems There are a lot of nearby McDonalds which offer free WiFi access. You can also take your laptop and relax at Starbucks all day. There is no restaurant or cafe to aid you from north. It's a long way to the nearest generator that generates electricity. There's no free Internet. There are two options: get a satellite connection or turn off the internet.

A sat-phone can be expensive and I'm unable to pay for it. However, I'll make a complete audio and video collection prior to venturing to the world without Internet. The last time I was online, I only had two songs. The songs were downloaded at the time, and all I was able to listen to was 3 jazz songs and a song I didn’t know the name of. That's it. Four songs over two weeks of absolute nothingness. I would have prepared myself for this had I known. I would have loaded my laptop up with TV shows, movies music videos, audio files that contained music and podcasts. I would spend long hours listening to my most-loved podcasts. It's simple to download them, then convert to MP3 and save to my computer. I then lay in my bed listening to the podcasts that I like, but don't always have the time to sit down and listen. This was supposed to be my golden hour or two weeks of gold. But it was actually two weeks of looking at the ceiling, and waiting for passengers each time there is a sound in the corridors.


The trip was empty , literally as well as figuratively. I've never been so bored. The ice was too thick. I was aware that this could eventually cause the issue. Therefore, the boat had to turn and pull back towards civilization. It wasn't a surprise however, again, long hours of downtime could have been used to watching podcasts, listening to DIY videos on home fixing and listening to music. Next time I will convert YouTube videos to mp4 and MP3 formats using my laptop. Music can lift spirits and lift your spirits, so don't let it derail you. Keep in mind that Netflix and Hulu apps let you download films and shows on your computer to watch offline. Also, these can be taken with you when you travel long distances to the Arctic. You don't want to lose time in boredom. Good luck!
