Let me tell you the story of my most recent Arctic cruise. It sounded wonderful, National Geographic trip thru ice and back, with Polar bears and various other animals. There would be the ice everywhere, and snow all around. Man-made devices were to overcome the elements and break through the frozen wilderness of the northern wilderness. It sounded like an enormous undertaking, a grand combat with the weather as well as the pole.

I was advised to carry as much technology as I could fit in my suitcases. I did manage to pack my laptop, as well as an enormous screen to extend my workspace. The staff assured me that the electricity was not an issue. I wasn't sure what was about to occur. I was unaware that two days into my 14-day trip , I'd be without Internet connection, and then disappear from the planet Earth for the next 10 days. I was stunned when this was over. No trip, however hard or remote, shouldn't result in an abrupt disconnect from the technology world, not in 21st century. Not only do I have unfinished business and I'm not prepared for it.

It doesn't matter whether you have to shut down your internet. Internet is available all over the world. If your home Internet connection fails it is possible to go to a McDonald's near you and obtain the free WiFi connection you require. Additionally, you could take your laptop to Starbucks to take a seat at the table and browse the Internet whenever you want to. But, there is no cafe, restaurant, or cafe can aid you up north. They are hours away from the nearest shack with electricity generated by a weak generator. There isn't free internet anywhere. There are two optionsto choose from: go offline or use satellite internet access.

I cannot afford a sat phone, it is too costly, particularly to use it for Internet access. I'll create a video and audio library to use for the next adventure without Internet. Last time I had two tracks. They were both downloaded earlier in the day. I couldn't enjoy 3 smooth jazz tracks and one famous song. All I can say is. 4 songs for two weeks of total silence. I would have prepared for this if I knew. I would have loaded my computer with television shows, movies, and lots of music videos. I would have listened to my favorite podcasts for hours. It's easy to download them, convert to MP3 and save to my personal computer. I then can lay in bed and listen to the podcasts that I love, but seldom find the time to listen. It would have been my golden hour or 2 weeks of gold. But it ended up being 2 weeks of looking at the ceiling and running to meet passengers every whenever a sound makes its way through the corridors..

Both metaphorically and literally The trip was empty. Never have I been so bored. The ice was thick. I was aware that this would cause the issue. So the boat had to be turned around and return to civilization. That wasn't unexpected however, again, endless hours of idle time could have been spent listening to podcasts, watching videos on fixing things at home, and simply listening to music. The next time, I'll convert YouTube videos into MP4 and mp3 on my laptop. There's no reason to feel down, music will always lift your spirits. Hulu, Netflix and other apps let you download movies and shows for offline viewing. You can also take them on long arctic trips. It is not a good idea to spend your time bored. Good luck!
