The AR-15 is the rifle of America. Every gun shop you roll into, you'll find a wall with AR-15s all over it. For good reason too. It's durable, proven in combat modular, and most likely one of the most ergonomic rifles in the market. However every once in a while there's a hankering to stand out from the norm and experiment with something different. This is when IWI Tavor comes in. IWI Tavor comes in. It's about as distinct as you can obtain from the AR-15 but without departing completely from its "Assault Rifle" genre.

IWI's TavorX95 was embraced as a replacement for Israeli Military in 2009. Israeli Military in 2009 to replace their aging M16 and M4 rifles. To cut a long story short it was that the Israeli Military was looking for an assault rifle with the speed of a 16" barrel, but the maneuverability of a short barreled rifle, similar to the MK18. The IDF decided to go with the X95 and has been integrating them since since. With its bullpup configuration, the X95 is about the same length as the MK18, but doesn't have the velocity problems because of the 16" barrel.

There are a variety of variations of the Tavor and we managed to get access to the X95 model. It is possible to imagine the X95 as Gen 2. Gen 2. The modifications from the SAR and the X95 are almost entirely ergonomic. The charging handle is better placed handle as well as safety improvements, a better trigger, and a few other features. There are many welcome changes resulted from feedback from the field.

Specifications

At first glance, it appears that the IWI Tavor carries a pretty big price tag at $1,999. It's expensive, but when you start to check the boxes that an ideal rifle for combat has, it isn't unreasonable. In comparison to other rifles in its class, this one falls pretty well.

Its 16.5" barrel in the X95 is exactly what you'd expect from a rifle designed for combat. Chrome lining and cold hammer forging provide an increased lifespan over your entry level rifle barrel. The 1:7 turn is pretty normal, and tends to be classified as milspec for this length barrel. This is quite helpful in stabilizing those larger grain 5.56 loads.

IWI chose to use a long stroke gas piston system in the Tavor which offers some benefits. The most notable is that you'll enjoy increased reliability from a long stroke piston system for two reasons. As opposed to a Direct Impingement system such as the AR-15, a piston gun isn't able to expel gas straight into the. The gas that comes from the barrel pushes the face of the piston within the gas tube, instead of going to the bolt carrier group. Long stroke systems also have an added benefit of applying a lot of force to the bolt carrier which makes it very reliable even in harsh conditions.

One of the most intriguing features, especially in the period of "optics ready" rifles, is the iron sights. These aren't your typical iron sights, however. They're built right inside frames of rifles, these sights can be tucked carefully away when not in use , leaving complete acces to top of the picatinny rail. Additionally the front sight has tritium vials, making it easy to see at night.

The Tavor comes ready for attachments with picatinny rails on the top located at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. It is important to note this Tavor X95 doesn't come with M-Lok slots. Despite that we didn't find much issue getting the accessories we needed including a guaranteed M300c gun, a pressure pad and a BCM Vertical Foregrip. M-Lok might be nice, but it's not an essential item in the golden age of weapons accessories.

Shooting the X95

Due to current constraints in ammo, we've only been able to run around 300 rounds through the X95. In general, we'll run through 500-1,000, but what can you expect to do in 2020? However, we'll at least offer our thoughts on those 300 rounds. We did however , do an adequate amount of dry firing in hopes to gain some time with the gun.

The X95 requires some training on the part of the user, especially if you're used to using the AR-15. Reloads at first appear slow and inefficient. You'll go to insert a mag in front of the trigger, only to realize that your memory of muscle misguided you. The only solution for that is to take the time to practice reloads at home to get that muscle memory in check. We can safely say that it gets easier the more time behind the gun.

Ergonomics are perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of the X95. It's just a bit awkward to use initially due to lack of experience which becomes apparent as you sit down and find that everything is sort of where it ought to be. The magazine release is quickly pressable with your index finger and without breaking your grip, and the safety is toggled by your thumb, without breaking your the grip. To drop the bolt, you can press the enormous button that sits in the middle of the magwell. You can do this with your thumb right after inserting a magazine. When you reload a mag using the Tavor you're still bringing your arm further to your body which may offer a bit more stability. Lastly with regards to Ergos, the Tavor X95 is completely adjustable. The entire control can be swapped to the opposite side. It is even possible to change the direction in which cases eject.

Let's discuss accuracy. We won't go too deep into this since we're not precision shooters and we do not keep match-grade ammunition on hand. Overall, we think we think the Tavor is plenty accurate as a gun for combat. It's easy to keep 3-4 inch groups within 100 meters. For a combat rifle it's perfectly acceptable, and we'd like to see how the 1:7 twist does with 77 grain. It should likely shoot more compact groups, because from everything has been written about the Tavor can shoot 2" groups with quality ammo with 77 grain. But, with available 55 and 62 grains we shot, there aren't many complaints on our end.

The trigger. That's the thing everyone asks about. Bullpups don't have a reputation for crisp trigger pulls, but the X95 is definitely an improvement. The trigger pull is heavy and there isn't any traveling to the wall. The whole pull is basically the break and the reset is somewhat long. Overall the Tavor has a serviceable trigger for the task at hand. Is it the best available? No, but bad foundations can hinder your progress even before you pull the trigger.

Finally, the X95 handles very well. Its balance is perfect despite the heavy bits sitting at toward the rear end of the weapon. It always finds its way to your shoulder each time. Drills that are quick is easy, and the weight on the rear seems to soak recoil. If you've had the pleasure of working behind an 16" AR-15 you'll know that it's not exactly the most user-friendly firearm to use in tight spaces and the barrel is constantly moving into objects when drilling. But that's not the case with Tavor. Additionally the Length of the pull, despite not having any adjustment options, proved pretty much perfect for all the players that were on the Blade-Tech team that ran it.

Reliability

Flat out, we didn't have any issues with the Tavor in any way. It ate all of Wolf steel case, American Eagle 223, Lake City M193, and Federal M855. This is a wide range of ammunition and in the midst of ammunition shortages, it's appreciated because it means you can shoot whatever you can find. Also, tavor x95 for sale saw no reliability issues with switching between different kinds of magazines. All of them from Colt twenty round to thirty round PMAGs performed perfectly in the Tavor.

We also didn't lubricate or clean the Tavor. We ran it straight out of the packaging and found it good to go. Due to this piston-based system, the rifle looks like it could go pretty far without seeing the need for cleaning. It's a bit hard to determine if we actually fired the gun, which is mostly because piston guns don't let much carbon back to the bolt.

Final

Overall we had a great time running through the Tavor X95. It's one of those guns with a lot of personality. You'll see yourself texting photos of it to friends saying, "Just signed up for space force" or pictures of it sitting right next to the other 11.5" rifles. This is the charm that is the Tavor. It's just one of those firearms that will bring a smile on your face each time you open up the gun safe. The attraction of having an 16" barrel inside a gun that is so small isn't going to wear off.

With its size, it's simple to put in bags, and quite easy to move around with. The smooth recoil and good ergonomics allowed us to push the Tavor to the limit once we were able to master it. The capability to run 5.56 STANAG and PMAGS is a nice touch too. If you're interested in military rifles and you want to try something different than one of the AR-15 The Tavor is definitely the first choice. It's priced well in its class of rifles and comes with the features you'd expect at the price point. Along with its shooting capability and its ability to spark conversation at the distance The Tavor X95 is one that could be safely added to your collection.
