Assistive technology is any device, software, or equipment that helps people with disabilities learn, communicate, or function better.
AT can be broken down into two categories: high-tech and low-tech. Examples include rubber grips, page holders, calculators, wheelchairs, and various software.
AT helps people with disabilities to become more independent.
Every state has a program to help those that need AT to find AT.
AT in essence is a form of accommodation.
The AT program in Illinois is called Illinois Assistive Technology Program (IATP) and can be found at itech.org
AT services are any services that directly assist a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.
These include evaluating a student's need for a device; selecting, fitting, adapting, repairing, or replacing a device as needed; training or technical assistance to students, families, or any other people involved in the use of a device.
