What is a Sprig of Thyme?
A sprig of thyme is a beautiful thing to add to your kitchen or patio. Fresh thyme has a wonderful flavor that is much more pleasant than the dried kind. If you like to grill, then dried thyme can be disastrous. When using fresh herbs for cooking you should always use oil when using thyme because it is an excellent cooking agent. Dried thyme will burn rather quickly and it has no taste at all.

To what is a sprig of thyme you should add three inches of fresh stem and leave the stems on the plant for about a month. After the third month you should cut off the tops. The next step is to make the sprig and tie one end around the other so that it will not wilt out. You can then take the sprig and tie another end around the other end; this will keep the plant from spreading. After it has dried completely tie the other end around a piece of twine and then store the plant in a dark place. After the plant has established itself you can use it as a sprinkling herb or to put into your flower arrangements.

You can also use it to make a delicious dish called cranberry sauce for your Thanksgiving turkey. Next add about two tablespoons of olive oil to the bottom of the saucer. Place the sprigs of thyme on top of the oiled crouton and then wrap the entire thing in an aluminum foil.

You do not need to harvest what is a sprig of thyme right away. You can leave the sprigs on the herb until you are ready to use them. The thyme will dry out a bit when it is placed in the refrigerator so you may want to wrap the sprigs tightly in some cheesecloth or aluminum foil before putting them in the freezer. The thyme will continue to dry for a couple of weeks before you will be able to use it.

There are a number of recipes that call for a sprig of thyme but this one really stands out. If you have never cooked with this herb before you will find that this is a very easy to use and much less expensive way to bring flavor to your meals. You can add this herb to any recipe that calls for onions, carrots or potatoes. You might also want to try it with red peppers in order to introduce a new flavor to your food. It is quite easy to find different uses for this simple yet delicious herb and once you start to enjoy the wonderful flavor you will find that you love using what is a sprig of thyme in your cooking as much as you love all the other interesting things it offers.
