The Nvidia Inspector – What it Can Do for You

These detailed information can also be monitored via the "overlay monitors" which are then logged into a CSV file for further analysis. This tutorial will show you how to unlock your laptop with the Nvidia Inspector; and it also shows you how to back out of the process if you get stuck.

The first thing you need to do is to download and run the Nvidia Inspector from the Google Chrome browser. When you start up the program, it will prompt you for some configuration data (usually about the number of video card drivers and also about the number of profiles that should be installed). You should type in at least five different numbers into the "overlay monitors" column found in the main window. The Inspector will then scan your computer to find missing or obsolete installations. The Inspector will also scan your system tray for missing or outdated points and give you an error message if necessary.

Once the scan has been completed, Inspector will display the list with all devices found on your computer. Depending on the version of the program, you will see one or more columns for each driver profile, with a colored border representing the different device types. A row will be displayed for dual-core Nvidia video cards. You will see a different row if you have an older quad-core card.

The Inspector's second section will list all errors the program can detect. These include runtime errors (commonly known as DLL errors) and device errors, which are a bit more problematic because they can occur when you don't know any about the type of graphics card you have (it may be an older model or even a different brand). These errors can be divided into two groups: "Transparency Filterable Errors" or "Tessellation Filterable Elrors". We'll be looking at the transparency- and tessellation errors in the next section.

The Transparency Filterable Errors group describes all situations where the program can determine that settings for a particular card profile are not correct. For example, when there is an issue with the texture filtering, the texture will not be filtered properly resulting in large jagged edges being rendered on screen. This can cause all kinds of display issues such as screen fuzzing and slow-moving images. By enabling the use of the profiler, the program can determine what errors it is detecting, which allows it to perform a manual fix in the process.

The Tessellation settings will be the focus of the next section. This section is intended to highlight the risk of error in the tessellation process. The tessellation process involves the video card accessing many different memory locations to help it construct the image that is drawn onto the screen. There are three tessellation stages: pre Blend, post Blend and MSAA. There are many issues that need to be addressed in each stage. If you're using a factory default setting for your video card, you should ensure that you are modifying the tessellation stage settings yourself to prevent these issues from arising.
